Scientific Meetings in Dentistry

International Congress of the National Union of Dental Associations
Bucharest, October 7-10

During this meeting were presented the overall objectives and baseline results for the Com4You Project.

Oral Health Profile of Teenagers 15-16 years

Objective: baseline evaluating oral health status among schoolchildren aged 15-17 yrs. Material and method: 55 schoolchildren were examined, 60% girls, from 2 high schools, based on ICDAS criteria. Results: in permanent dentition, the caries prevalence was 63,63%, the mean value of D3-6MF-S was 4.07 ± 4.784 and of D3-6MF-T, 4 ± 3.266. The number of incipient lesions (D1,2-S) is 4.53 ± 3.839 (more than cavitary lesions, p<0.001). The girls have a history of impaired decayed surfaces (D3-6MF-S=4.24 ± 4.981) and teeth (D3-6MF-T=3.12 ± 3.462) over boys (D3-6MF-S=3.81 ± 4.574, D3-6MF-T=2.91 ± 3.022), differences were not statistically significant. The plaque index OHI-S is 1.46 ± 0.76 for all, the differences from girls (1.35 ± 0.6) and boys (1.64 ± 0.44) were not statistically significant (p>0.05). The prevalence of gingivitis is 67.3% for entire group, for 27.3% of them being localised form and for 40% generalised gingivitis.

Conclusions: the prevalence of dental caries in permanent dentition is very high, with differences between sexes, but not statistically significant. The number of incipient lesions is significant higher than the number of surfaces with cavitary lesions. Gingivitis is present in more than half of cases and the level of oral hygiene is moderate.

Dental Caries and Gingivitis for Adolescents of 13-15 yrs

Objective: baseline assessment of caries and gingivitis status among teenagers of 6-th grade. Material and method: 65 schoolchildren aged arround 13 yrs, 55.4% girls, from 2 elementary schools were examined based on ICDAS criteria. Results: for temporary dentition, the caries prevalence was 85.71%, d3-6ef-s =4.79 ± 5.010 and d3-6ef-t =2.14±2.070, both based mostly on decayed component. For incipient lesions d1,2-s: 0.43 ± 0.938 (10 times smaller than cavitary lesions, p = 0.016). For permanent dentition, the prevalence was 70.76%, the mean value of D3-6MF-S was 2.72 ± 2.707 and D3-6MF-T is 2 ± 2.768, for incipient lesions was D1,2S: 3.28 ± 3.590. In temporary dentition, girls have twice as many decayed surfaces (d3-6ef-s = 6.83) over boys (d3-6ef- s = 3.25). Instead, the permanent dentition the ratio changes in favor of girls (D3-6MF-S=2.5±2.513, compared to boys (D3-6MF-S=3 ±2.952). The prevalence of gingivitis is 40%, the OHI-S plaque index was 1.61 ± 0.06, almost equally for girls (1.68 ± 0.58) and boys (1.51±0.5). Conclusions: the caries prevalence is very high in both dentition, with differences between sexes. The prevalence of gingivitis was medium and the level of oral hygiene is moderate.
